Kalkan Property: Not Your Run of the Mill Spot

When you read about Turkey property, and holiday destinations a lot you come to see that many of the top spots have an awful lot in common. Because of Turkey's rich history and their location being primarily coastal, most have sites of historical importance, and harbours, and have transformed over the years from trading hubs to tourist towns, so all have a selection of shops, bars and restaurants to be proud of. This, of course on top of the obvious commonality sun, sea and sand in abundance.

Then you have Kalkan. Sure, property in Kalkan is soaked by 300 days of sunshine per year, and it has some great bars and restaurants, but it is not like the other touristic towns in Turkey. Whereas most of Turkey's top tourist towns are suited to the club 18-30 experience and are within an hour of an airport, Kalkan is 2 hours from the nearest airport, and offers a much quieter, more relaxing ambiance than most spots.

How About a Holiday Home in Kalkan

Whereas in the likes of Antalya and Dalaman apartments are available in abundance, as many holiday home buyers want a bolt hole in the sun they can catch a quick flight to enjoy a week or 2 week's holiday. Because Kalkan is further from the airport, it is much more popular with those who can take longer breaks, retirees and the wealthy. Thus, Kalkan holiday homes are most often villas.

Kalkan doesn't have historical sites scattered around from different dynasties and eras. What it does have is a massive Lycian era site, which is home to the historical remnants of several of the Lycian Federation's biggest cities.

Xanthos, was the capital of the Lycian federation and is now the best of the historical sites in Kalkan, here you will find Harpy tomb,Pillar tomb, an Obelisk, an amphitheatre, triumphal arch, Byzantine church with mosaic floors and a fortress on top of the acropolis. Xanthos is almost smack bang in the middle of the other sites. Not far from Xanthos you have Tlos, which was another of the Lycian Federation's six principal cities, and features: Acropolis Hill, the Tomb of Bellerophon, Stadium, Market Hall, two Baths and a Roman amphitheatre. Patara is another of the six principal cities and another great historical attraction, which is also home to one of the best beaches in Kalkan. Sidyma and Letoon are also worth a visit for history lovers. Between the sites archeologists have had finds dating back to the 8th century BC.

You'd need to be pretty adventurous to get round all those sites, but if you still have some adventurous spirit left over Saklikent Gorge is very popular indeed. It is the second-largest (20 km-long) gorge in Europe, the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey and always a popular excursion. For those who like a little more adrenaline flow in their holiday activities, Kalamar Beach Club (in Kalamar Bay) offers water-skiing, jet-skiing, canoeing and even pedalos.

And we have only scratched the surface of what Kalkan has to offer. It lacks nothing apart from nightclubs and a noisy nightlife, in favour of quiet bars and cultured restaurants. If you are in the fortunate position of being able to take longer breaks then a holiday home in Kalkan is well worth looking into.
