Turkey has seen rapid growth in users of social networking site Facebook. Users of Facebook in Turkey jumped from 4.5% to 10% of the population – or 7.5 million people – in just the last half of of 2008. Turkey is surpassed in Facebook users only by the U.S. (41 million), the U.K. (14.8 million) and Canada (10.7 million). France trails Turkey with 6.3 million users.
Facebook in Turkey is predominately used by people in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. One half of Turkey’s population is under the age of 29 (35.55 million people). One quarter of those individuals are between the ages of 15 – 29, prime Facebook age. That’s 17.75 potential social networking users based on age alone.
Internet penetration in Turkey is 18.94%, meaning every house in five has the internet. The population of Turkey is 75-80 million so if 2 people on average are using the internet in a house this makes approximately 28 million users. Another reason for the increase in users of Facebook in Turkey.
