A spokesperson for airport operator TAV told us that the scheduled flights are still running between Gazipasa and Istanbul Sabiha Gocken, although they have been reduced to twice per week because it is low season. He also said that 3 to 5 domestic / international private aircraft and several helicopters (ambulances, patrols of various govt entities etc.) are currently operating from the airport.
“So all in all; the info is wrong,” he added.
As we have heard here the airport is currently serving only the domestic market, but we were told back in April by TAV marketing specialist Yavuz AYTIŞ that flights from Britain and Russia are expected after runway expansion works are completed in 2011.
“Some narrow body aircrafts like A319 are able to operate without any limitation but next year (after runway extension project) we are planning to welcome routes from Britain and Russia as well,” he said.
Currently, international passengers must fly into Antalya airport, which, although very well served, is unfortunately 90 minutes away from Alanya by car.
