Starwood Hotels & Resorts have just signed an agreement with Faik Celik Turizm to develop two new hotels in Bursa under the Sheraton and Aloft brands. They are expected to open in 2013 and are located in a rapidly developing residential and business area adjacent to the upcoming football stadium and Bursa New Cultural Green Park. Starwood Hotels are currently expanding throughout Central Eastern Europe and have chosen Bursa as they see it becoming an important city in Turkey.
Bursa is about 150 miles from Istanbul on the south east shore of Sea of Marmara and is the fastest growing city in the country. In keeping with most of the country the population here is young and has been attracted to the city by employment opportunities in the textile and car industries as Fiat and Renault have factories here as do Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola, and it is also renowned for silk production. Bursa is also a centre for tourism as Turkey’s main winter sports and skiing centre is located about 20 miles away on the slopes of Mount Olympus, and the area is a national park.
The fact that a major hotel chain is choosing to invest in this area shows that it believes in the development potential of the city. Roeland Vos, president of Starwood EMEA has said that he believed the city is evolving and will become a metropolitan centre of culture, industry, sport and leisure and that this combination makes it an ideal location for these hotels. As more tourists and business travellers are attracted to the city the demand for rental property will increase.
