European tourists still immune to crisis
While the economic crisis is seriously affecting the United States and European Union, luxurious cruise ships continue to bring the citizens of those countries to Izmir. Despite the economic crisis, there has been no decrease in the number of cruise tourists to Izmir. A total of 19 ships have come to the Alsancak port since Oct. 2 more than the number of ships that came last month.A large number of tourists visit Efes, Kusadasi, Çesme and Bergama after getting off the ship, while those who stay in Izmir take taxis and join city tours. It is impossible to find a place to sit on city buses, which are free for tourists.
Nurdagan Evliya, coordinator of MSC Cruise, a cruise ship company owned by Arkas Holding, said they had not yet felt the impact of the crisis. Saying cruise reservations were made before the crisis and no complications has been encountered so far, Evliya added that over 2,800 tourists had come on ships with a 3,000-passenger capacity. This month there was an increase in the number of the ships, according to the Izmir Chamber of Commerce.Tour operator Ali Irfan Kaynak also said Izmir, full of historical artifacts, was the most interesting city on the tour.
