Turkey – Alanya Gazipasa Airport: What’s the Story?

Many of you will have heard that the Gazipasa Airport, the closest airport to the Alanya hotspot, is to welcome its first international flight on the 22nd of May.

This will be an important milestone in the history of the airport, which was first built in 2001. The flight will be a Hamburg International carrier, flying from Hamburg. According to Yavuz AYTIS, a marketing specialist with airport operator TAV, it will then carry passengers back to Hamburg, , who we spoke to earlier today.

When asked when the airport is expecting to add new destinations, especially British, AYTIS said:

“Some narrow body aircrafts like A319 are able to operate without any limitation but next year (after runway extension project) we are planning to welcome routes from Britain and Russia as well.”

AYTIS also told us why the airport’s earlier attempts at opening were unsuccessful.

“The problem with the earlier opening was the procedures and negotiations regarding the project but everything is ok for now,” he said.

Alanya has one of the largest populations of British expatriates in Turkey, and is potentially a massive tourism and property hotspot. Many people are ready and waiting to develop Alanya into such a place, and hoping that the TAV momentum driving the Gazipasa airport doesn’t peeter out or get too badly impeded.
