Turkey: Despite global economic downturn Turkish airlines continue to grow.
According to Mr Ali Ariduru, Turkey’s Civil Aviation Authority General Manager, 60 airlines went out of business because last year’s economic crisis. It is estimated by IATA, (International Air Transport Association) that losses of over 9 Billion USD will be incurred this year.
Turkey seems unaffected by this economic downturn and continues to grow with Turkish Airlines profits a healthy 181% increase in the first six months of 2010 compared with 2009. There are now 17 airlines operating in Turkey and with over 50 new aircraft being added to airline fleets this year.
Turkey has also seen this contraction as an opportunity and has many sponsorship and marketing deals as seen by Turkish Airlines sponsorship deal with Manchester United and FC Barcelona. Whereas many European airlines are cutting back on destinations Turkish Airlines are adding new routes all the time
