“Turkey is part of the European family…” says Spanish Foreign Minister
“Spain, the current European Union president, believes that Turkey belongs to the 27-country bloc”, said Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, whose country holds the EU presidency through this June, in a Sunday interview with Germany’s Welt am Sonntag.
Moratinos commented on the advantages that Turkey’s membership would add to the EU and said, “There may be different opinions between EU member states over Turkey’s membership, but all have agreed to wait and watch the negotiations.” Spain hopes to open accession talks with Ankara in four new policy areas.
“Turkey is part of the European family. It is better to have Turkey inside the EU than to leave it outside”, said Moratinos. He added that the EU considers Turkey as a partner of great strategic importance.
