14 July 2011: According to press reports, Nihat Ergun, the Minister of Science, Industry and Technology, said Turkey intends to start production of a Turkish made Tablet PC to be given free of charge to 15 million students in Turkey.
Ergun is quoted as saying “In order to support the domestic industry, we have expanded the scope of public tenders. From now on, the state will pay more attention to buying domestic products, and in line with this, the Ministry of Education will be a driving force behind the development of tablet PCs in Turkey,”
The expected costs will around 7.5 Billion USD. Ergun went on to say “The basic idea is to support domestic production and employment, thus contributing to the national economy”.
The aim of the project is to improve quality and standards in education through the use of advanced technologies with gradual implementation e-textbook learning in the classroom.
