Turkish Airlines Istanbul Ataturk Now Most Diverse Hub in Europe

Posted on 10 November 2011

From its hub at Istanbul Ataturk, Turkish Airlines now offers a wider range of non-stop flights than any other carrier does from a single airport. Turkish Airlines now flies non-stop from Ataturk to 172 destinations around the world, leaving its nearest competitor Lufthansa some way behind flying to 158 destinations from Frankfurt, and Air France with 149 from Paris.

This is now the second time that Turkish Airlines has claimed this accolade, having had more destinations last summer, only for Lufthansa to overtake it once again this summer. However, with such a big push ahead, Anna.Aero believes that this will most likely put Turkish Airlines at the top of this tree once and for all — except for a major push by Lufthansa once they open the new runway at Frankfurt.

Anna.Aero now predicts that Turkish Airlines will easily surpass its target of 30 million passengers this year. According to the air travel data collection website the airline has seen passenger numbers grow by at least 10% per year every year since 2003. This, coupled with the 9.6% growth already recorded in the first 9 months of the year, and the number of new routes recently announced/launched makes this a near-foregone conclusion.

Among Europe’s other carriers offering diverse hubs are British low cost carriers Ryanair and Easyjet. Ryanair flies non-stop to 94 locations from London Stansted, and Easyjet to 68 destinations from Gatwick. Both cover a substantial number more in the peak summer months.
