Is the EU missing out by its attitude toward Turkey?

Posted on 24 February 2012

Istanbul, 23 February 2012 – Mr Egemen Bagis, Turkey‘s EU Minister, speaking at the 68th Meeting of Turkey – EU Joint Parliament Commission being in Istanbul said 2012 will be a tough year for Turkey’s EU membership process because Greek Cyprus would be the president of the rotating EU Presidency and elections are taking place in France, however the process might look very differently after 2013. Bagis went on to say the EU is not determined enough to allow Turkey’s membership whereas Turkey is determined to follow the process adding we have witnessed that the EU’s vision for the future is far behind that of Turkey. Bagis said Turkey is far ahead in many areas compared to various EU members, it faces a double standard that no country in history has ever faced adding Istanbul alone is sufficient to show how Turkey is crucial for the EU and how Turkey can add richness to the values of a union. Bagis said Turkish citizens of different faiths were today in the most peaceful and prosperous status as they never enjoyed before in the history of the Republic of Turkey. Source TurkishNY
