Turkish Airlines Wins Best in Europe 2nd Year Running

Posted on 20 July 2012

Turkish Airlines (THY) has won “Best Airline in Europe” for the second time running in the Skytrax World Airline Awards. Skytrax is the largest airline and airport ranking authority. Additionally, it won in the “Best Airline in Southern Europe” and the “Best Premium Economy Class Airline Seat” categories.

Last year was the first time Turkish Airlines had won in the Skytrax awards, for which it surveys over 18 million airline passengers from over 100 countries.

Speaking at the award ceremony held at the Farnborough International Airshow in Britain, Turkish Airlines General Manager Temer Kotil said: “THY left behind Lufthansa and Swiss as direct competitors to become Europe’s best airline once again. We now aim to be the world’s best.”

Passenger numbers at the airline have grown 20% in the first half of 2012 according to Kotil, well above the industry average of 4%. “International fliers passing through Istanbul for connecting flights increased by 47 percent. This growth rate shows that Istanbul is right at the center of world’s airline industry,” Kotil added.

Turkey plans to build a massive third airport in Istanbul, with a capacity of 150 million passengers, to ease ever increasing air traffic.

In other news foreign direct investment into Turkey hitting 6.5 billion USD in the first five months of 2012 saw it jump 6 places in the international rankings, to become the 23rd biggest recipient of foreign direct investment in the world.
