Turkish Tourism Continues Strong Growth in May

Posted on 26 June 2013

Turkey is a tourists dream. In fact, it is like a food that you are apprehensive to try out but then when you do, you find out that you have been missing out terribly. Tourists made this realisation about Turkey round about 2002 and ever since then Turkish tourism numbers have grown beyond rhyme or reason and unhindered even by one of the most ferocious financial fires to ever burn mankind and his money.

The latest news from Turkey is that 3.8 million foreigners flocked to its blue skies and sandy beaches in May, almost 18% more than the figure recorded a year previous.

According to the data, which was published by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Mediterranean resort of Antalya welcomed the most foreign visitors in May with 1.4 million arrivals, followed by Istanbul with almost 400,000 visitors. The Aegean province of Mugla and Thracian city of Edirne came third and fourth respectively.

The report also shows that Turkey welcomed over 10 million visitors in the five months ending May, which is 18.4% higher than the number of visitors who entered during the first five months of 2012. In the January-May data Germany is still the top tourism market for Turkey with a share of 14.2 percent, followed by Russia with 9.5 percent. Georgians, Bulgarians and British also visited Turkey in significant numbers in the given period.

Turkey is the 6th most popular tourist destination according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) Tourism Highlights 2012 Edition. The Mediterranean nation attracted a total of 31.8 million foreign visitors in 2012.
