The number of tourists visiting Turkey increased by 4.93 percent in June compared with the same month of the previous year according to data released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Thursday.
The increase took the total number of visitors in June to 4.7 million, while the number of tourists in the first half of the year was 14.5 million — an increase of 14.3 percent over the first half of last year. According to the data, which the ministry received from the National Police Department, the number of daily visitors per day in June averaged 221,426.
According to the data Russian tourists were the most prolific, with 690,308 Russians visiting in June. Meanwhile German tourists topped the list for the first half with 1.9 million. Tourists from England followed Russia in June with 350,352, while Georgia, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Sweden, Syria, France and Ukraine were also mentioned in descending order by the number of visitors.
In the first half, Germany was followed by Russia at 1.6 million, as England, Georgia, Bulgaria, Syria, Iran, the Netherlands, France and the United States also followed in the ranking.
It is noted that hotels experienced a lot of cancellations in Istanbul during the recent protests. Also according to STR Global, occupancy dropped by 19 percent in June, the biggest decline since the start of the Iraq war.
