Tourists just can’t get enough of Turkey – as Egypt’s problems deter holidaymakers

Turkey’s popularity as a tourist destination is growing at a faster rate than anywhere else in the Mediterranean, according to recent figures from the Union of Mediterranean Tourist Hotels (AKTOB).

The country welcomed 19.1 million foreign tourists over a period of seven months in 2013, signifying a 10.6 per cent rise compared to last year’s figures for the same period. Egypt’s recent problems are expected to have driven some of its tourist market to Turkey.

Spain still attracts the highest number of tourists out of countries in the Mediterranean, this year hosting 34 million tourists between January and July, which was a 3.9 per cent year-on-year rise. Turkey is ranked second.

An effect of Turkey’s increasing popularity was the decision by German airline Airberlin to launch additional flights from several German airports to Antalya on the Turkish Riviera. This is the airline’s reaction to the situation in Egypt as the airline wanted to offer passengers an alternative to holiday destinations on the Red Sea. The additional flights to Antalya will start in the period between 1st September and 3rd November 2013 from Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne-Bonn, Leipzig, Munich and Nuremberg.
