Figures released by Turkey’s Statistical Institute (TurkStat) showed that of the 1.157 million properties sold in the country last year, 5,548 were to foreigners in Antalya, 2,447 were to overseas buyers in Istanbul, 1,112 to foreigners in Aydin and 1,053 were to foreigners in Mugla.
Antalya is home not only to the city of the same name, but also to the popular resorts of Alanya, Side, Belek, Kalkan, Kas and Kemer. Aydin include Altinkum and Kusadasi, while within Mugla are the hot spots of the Bodrum Peninsula, Marmaris and Fethiye.
This trend has continued and encouragingly, for January 2014 alone there were 1,207 sales to overseas buyers, with Antalya proving the most popular province with 464 sales, followed by Istanbul with 243 sales, Sakarya 119, Mugla 75 and Aydın 70.
For overall house sales, including Turks and foreigners, Istanbul recorded the highest number of transactions in 2013, with its 234,789 sales representing a 20.3 per cent share of the total. After Istanbul was Ankara with 137,773 (11.9 per cent) house sales and then İzmir with 72,421 (6.3 per cent) house sales. Overall, total house sales grew 65 per cent in 2013 compared with 2012.
January 2014 was much the same, with İstanbul achieving the highest share (20 per cent) of house sales with 17,489. Meanwhile, the Reidin-GYODER New House Price index confirmed that Turkish property values continue to rise fast, growing 13.55 per cent in the year to January 2014.
