Foreign visitors to Turkey on the up in 2014, with property sales also steady

Turkey’s popularity with foreigners is going from strength to strength, after figures showed a 5.07 per cent year-on-year hike in the number of visitors to the country during the first four months of 2014.

The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism reported that 7.03 million foreigners visited the country between January and April, with April alone attracting 2.6 million foreign tourists, representing an increase of 8.2 per cent year-on-year.

Germans made up 15.9 per cent of all foreign tourists in Turkey in April, with Russians comprising the second largest group (8.14 per cent), followed by visitors from the UK (5.6 per cent).

The Turkish city that drew the highest number of foreign tourists in April was Istanbul, with 1,015,000 visitors, followed by Antalya with 796,000 and Edirne with 233,000. In 2013, 34.9 million foreign nationals visited Turkey, a sharp rise of almost 10 per cent compared to 2012.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s Statistical Institute has reported that 83,610 houses were sold in Turkey in April. Istanbul attracted the highest share (20.5 per cent) of house sales, accounting for 17,130 houses sold. Next was Ankara (11.1 per cent) with 9,249 house sales and İzmir (6.2 per cent) 5,181 house sales.

Istanbul was also home to the highest share of new-build sales (20.1 per cent) in April, or 7,567 in number of sales. New-build property accounted for 44.9 per cent of all Turkish property sales in April with 37,555 houses sold, compared to resale sales, which totalled 46,055.

In terms of sales to foreigners in April, the Antalya province recorded the highest number of sales, namely 563. Next was İstanbul with 489 house sales, then Aydın with 109, Bursa with 89, Muğla with 86 and Mersin with 50 house sales.
