After Brexit: Brits to Apply for ETIAS To Travel in Europe

2 mins read

With Brexit affecting how Brits travel to Europe, the EU has confirmed travellers don’t need a visa, but they will pay 7 euros every 3 years for an ETIAS, a document of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System.

ETIAS, expected to launch in 2021 via the electronic application, will not just apply to British travellers but for anyone from a non-EU country. It’s the result of much discussion about security and the migrant crisis, with the BBC comparing it to the United States version of ESTA, (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) which currently costs 14 USD.

ETIAS For Brits After Brexit

First discussed in 2016, ESIAS will ” strengthen security checks on those persons who travel visa-free to the EU”. Anyone on the list of 61 counties outside of the EU, will need to apply, which will allow them to enter the EU for a maximum of 90 days for tourism, business or medical and transit-related journeys.

Citizens of certain countries will also still need to apply for a visa. The EU has confirmed that Brits do not need a visa if there is a reciprocal cause.

About ETIAS

Etias EU Travel

Anyone between the ages of 18 to 70 must pay a fee to complete the application process, which is expected to take 10 minutes. The EU will set up a dedicated website and mobile apps for easy access to the application form.

If anyone is unable to use the application system because of disability, age or illiteracy, a third party can do it for them. The assessment process is automated, and unless flagged by the system, applicants will receive their approval form within minutes.

Red flag applications will then be checked manually. Anyone denied permission can appeal.

Date bases lined up to check applications include the…

  • Schengen Information System (SIS),
  • Visa Information System (VIS),
  • Europol data,
  • Eurodac database,
  • Entry/Exit System (EES),
  • Interpol databases
  • Interpol Stolen and Lost Travel Document database (SLTD),
  • Interpol Travel Documents Associated with Notices database (TDAWN),
  • a dedicated ETIAS watch list and specific risk indicators
