Weather in Greece & Greek climate

Gorgeous Greece, its mainland and islands are visited by over 33 million foreign tourists each year. Holiday makers love the fact it virtually guarantees sunshine for our annual holidays and we don’t have to wait until July to visit, as in June we see the temperature hitting at least 29°C. Apart from the sunshine there are many islands with picture postcard beaches, historic architecture, mouthwatering cuisine and it’s only a 3 hour and 30 minute flight from the UK and less from the rest of Europe.
The climate in Greece is typically Mediterranean and the sun hits just about everywhere in southern mainland Greece and all the islands, which are scattered in the Ionian, Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. On average the sun shines for 250 days per year with hot and dry summers and winters in the south and islands mild with some rain. Greece has over 6000 islands, however only 1,200 are habitable and they are split into groups of islands, it’s impossible to mention them all, so I have listed the most popular.

The main summer season in Greece is from June to September with the best months to visit June, July August and September to enjoy maximum temperatures. Sightseeing is best in May and October and there are plenty of archaeological sites and museums to keep you entertained. Athens in July and August are exceptionally hot and humid and as this is the favoured city for sightseeing, its best to avoid at these times and visit in spring.
