Flagship Barbados resort champions Caribbean property market with international awards and expansion plans

Anyone looking for the crème-de-la-crème of Caribbean property should have the Royal Westmoreland resort in Barbados at the top of their list.

The famous estate, located in Barbados, cemented its position as one of the world’s most desirable residential leisure resorts with two awards at the International Property Awards 2015-2016, namely ‘Best Golf Development’ and ‘Best Single Property’.

At the same time, Royal Westmoreland’s owner, UK-based leisure entrepreneur John Morphet, has announced plans to develop another 250 acres of land with a 9-hole golf course designed by Reece Jones (Robert Trent Jones Jr’s brother), a collection of residences on 31 lots and potentially a hotel.

‘Best Single Property’ was awarded to a stunning property called ‘Idyll Moments’, a 6,700-square-foot villa commissioned by a British family. Designed by Gillespie & Steel Associates and project managed by the Royal Westmoreland Construction Director and his team, it is built in a modern Caribbean architectural style with clean lines, slick interiors, large terraces and enormous expanses of glass to maximise the views. It has been one of the first villas on the estate to break away from the Caribbean vernacular.

The centrepiece of the Royal Westmoreland is the impressive golf course by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. The course offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea from every green and utilises many natural features, including an old coral stone quarry on fifth and sixth holes.

Two distinct sets of nine holes make for a memorable round. The front nine, built on water table land, navigates through the tropical Barbadian landscape, whilst the back nine plays directly through the estate’s spectacular resort homes.

Veteran golfing legend and head of the golf academy there, Bill Longmuir says: “The Royal Westmoreland course is widely regarded as one of the finest in the Caribbean, both technically for the accomplished golfer and aesthetically for the enthusiastic amateur.”
