Alfama, Lisbon, Portugal
Alfama spreads its self nicely over the south-eastern slope of the hill between the São Jorge Castle and the Tejo River in one of the oldest and distinctive districts in Lisbon. The port and docks here have played an important role in Lisbon’s past and continues to do so today. As Alfama has grown so has its reputation as a trendy artisan district although it still retains its authentic charm. Beautiful old white houses in narrow cobbled streets are a delight to stroll around; they lead from the Tejo Estuary up the steep hill all the way to Jorge Castle.
