This delightful area in Lisbon is not only an exclusive address, it’s also known as a prosperous district. Its majestic 19th century mansions are being tastefully renovated to provide modern apartments without losing their charming appeal. This upmarket neighbourhood is home to the Principe Real Garden, art galleries, quaint antique shops, chic bars and boutiques selling the latest fashion trends. Designer labels offer high end retail along with brand names at the Embaixada Shopping Centre. This district is historic Lisbon at its best. This is one of the most desirable locations in Lisbon and its becoming more popular with the opening of exclusive, fine dining eateries.
A lucky few are able to reside full time in Principe Real, however, tourists visit to spend just a few hours strolling around the tree lined streets, taking in the sheer beauty of this area. It’s easy to forget that Lisbon is a capital city, as Principe Real is vastly different from other more busy areas in Lisbon. This is where you can take your time, enjoy a stroll and admire the imposing buildings and architecture. Take the weight off your feet, sit at any one of the street cafes, people watch and sip on a delicious cup of coffee or a cool glass of wine if its summer time.
It’s not a typical district that tourists visit, but they escape to Principe Real for some time out. They sit in the stunning gardens of the Jardim do Principe Real and simply absorb the calming atmosphere. Chiado is just a 10 minute (2.0 km) drive away and this location is where you can have entertainment in abundance with its many museums and theatres. Lisbon is known for its yellow trams and they are a superb method of getting about Principe Real and Lisbon as a whole. In particular, routes 24 and 28 are the most popular and ideal for tourists.
Principe Real offers anyone who visits the true flavour of Portugal. Meander around the pretty streets and take in the views. The many trees provide much needed shelter especially from the heat of the summer sun. A must see is the one hundred year old cypress tree called Cedro-do-Barco. It’s a favourite of the locals who live in Principe Real, it covers a 20 m radius with its beautiful foliage. Visit the Natural History Museum and view its collection of dinosaur fossils, the solar system, history of the earth and geological exhibits amongst others. The oldest garden in Portugal is the Botanical Gardens in Principe Real.
Portugal has a temperate climate with hot and dry summers and wet winters. The Atlantic Ocean along with the Mediterranean Sea determines its weather conditions. The daily temperature rarely drops below 16°C year round. Portugal is just a 2 hours and 45 minutes flight away from the UK and closer to the rest of Europe.
