Guide to Guardamar

Guardamar del Segura is more commonly known as Guardamar its located on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante in mainland Spain. Its stunning location is at the mouth of the Segura River in south Valencia, this lovely Mediterranean resort has a large pine forest alongside its spectacular white sandy beach that spans a staggering 11 km of natural coastline. The area was once famous as a fishing and farming area before it became a tourist resort. Historically known as the guardian of the River Segura it has been inhabited by many different cultures, seeing its enviable position on top of a hill overlooking the Vega Baja region and its close proximity to the River itself.

Often referred to as the paradise on the Costa Blanca this picture perfect resort is idyllic with forests, beaches and dunes that add to the sheer beauty of Guardamar, add the clear blueness of the Mediterranean Sea and you’re on to one stunning Spanish resort. Guardamar really is an exceptionally pretty area, the beach seems to go on forever and the promenade is lined with cafes, bars and restaurants. The dunes offer shelter whilst sunbathing and are said to be blown inland from the sand deposits of the river and sea by the East winds.

It’s a natural beauty spot with colourful birds and a multitude of flora and fauna. Its perfect for families and the little ones are safe on this expanse of beach. Its super location between Santa Pola and Torrevieja means that the transport links are excellent therefore, travelling to other villages and towns nearby are made easy such as Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and close to bigger cities such as Alicante, Murcia, Cartagena and Benidorm.

Guardamar is only a 45 minute drive from Alicante International Airport. It has a Mediterranean climate, like most of the Costa Blanca region, with cool sea breezes in summer and protection from the mountains against the cold winds in winter.

There are wonderful parks you can take a stroll or cycle around and you will see plenty of wildlife who has made it their home including birds, fish and swans plus the odd squirrel or two. At the very mouth of the River Segura is the Marina de las Dunas here you will see the most beautiful boats and yachts moored up, it’s a lovely way to spend the afternoon. If you love sports there are lots of choices to keep you entertained, golfers will be happy with the superb choice of golf courses in the area such as the course at Ciudad Quesada with its wonderful selection of amenities and within an hours drive of Guardamar you will be in golf heaven with a multitude of courses. Every water sport you can imagine such as Jet Ski, diving, fishing, water skiing, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing are just a few to mention. All the family love a water park filled with slides, rides and shows and the sports centre is home to a swimming pool, basketball courts and tennis courts.

There are local and evening markets where you can buy pottery and souvenirs, and plenty of shops in Guardamar for everything else. For a spending spree head to Torrevieja and the big shopping centres. There are cafes, bars and restaurants that offer local traditional Spanish cuisine plus international menus. Guardamar speciality is top notch seafood and shellfish accompanied by fragrant rice dishes. If you’re looking for a more lively and upbeat nightlife then make your way into Torrevieja with a whole host of bars, restaurants, discos and nightclubs and dance until morning if you wish.
