Travelling to Turkey just got easier, thanks to the new e-visa system, which enables visitors to the country to obtain their visas on-line prior to touching down in Turkey, going live this month.
The new e-visa, available at www.evisa.gov.tr since 11th April, is aimed at cutting the queues at airports and making travelling easier for foreign guests. It should benefit owners of property in Turkey who make frequent trips out to their second home. Keys points about getting a Turkish e-visa are:
- Applicants must have a 6-month-valid passport, flight reservation and a credit/debit card (MasterCard, Visa and other frequently used cards) to obtain an e-visa.
- E-visas are issued for visitors travelling for tourism or trade purposes only and all other applicants (including students, foreign workers) should apply through Turkish Embassies or Consulates.
- It is advised that applications are made at least one week before departure and the e-visa will be e-mailed to the applicant within 24 hours after the application is submitted and payment is received.
The application takes only a few minutes to complete, and visitors no longer will have to face long queues at airports to get their visas. Travellers will be required to show their e-Visa to airport officials and customs officers and will need to carry it throughout the duration of their travel.
Currently, there are around 100 countries whose citizens are eligible to apply for an e-visa. Traditional ‘on-arrival’ visas will remain available at kiosks in Turkish airports until the end of the year. Whether purchased online or at an airport kiosk, the cost of the multiple entry visas, which are valid for 90 days, is £10 per person.
