Turkish wine is attracting more attention globally, after a leading UK supermarket introduced it to its shelves for the first time this month and a Turkish woman becomes the first official wine expert from the country.
In September Waitrose became the only British supermarket to stock a Turkish wine, namely Pamukkale Diamond, a red wine made with the familiar grapes Shiraz and Merlot, blended with the lesser known, much rarer indigenous Turkish varieties of Kalecik Karasi and Boğazkere. The blend has a ruby red colour with aromas of black cherries, blackberry and a hint of black pepper.
Ken Mackay, Waitrose Wine Buying Manager comments, “Our shoppers have an adventurous palate, so it’s important we keep challenging them by scouring the world for new and interesting wines. With the introduction of Pamukkale Diamond perhaps turkey“>Turkey will soon be as famous for its red wine as it is for its mouthwatering mezzes!”
Founded in 1962 by the Tokat family, the Pamukkale winery is now in its third generation as winemakers. It is situated in the town of Denizli, inland from the Port of Izmir in the county of Guney.
Also this month, Turk Dilek Caner has become Turkey’s first Master of Wine – an accolade given to a wine expert who must pass rigorous tests overseen by the Institute of Masters of Wine. “There are now very dedicated producers and wine enthusiasts in the country,” Caner told Decanter magazine. “Of course, one of my first steps will be to try and become more involved with Turkish wine, [to] see if I can help in any way. Hopefully, we’ll also see more Turkish MWs in the coming years.”
