Guide to Murcia

Partly burrowed between the Sierra de Orihuela and the Cresta de Gallo Mountains is Murcia, which is located on the south east coast of Spain on the Iberian Peninsula. Not only are there picturesque views of the Mediterranean, Murcia is set alongside the Segura River which is flanked by historic buildings serving up delightful views. This area is referred to as the “Costa Calida” which translates to the warm coast and Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca is also known as being part of this area.

Murcia is home to the popular resorts of La Manga and Mil Palmeras which are famous for their beautiful beaches and calm waters. La Manga is most famously known as a strip of land which is 21km in length and just 100 metres wide. The strip separates the Mar Menor Lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea, from Cabo de Palos to the Punta del Mojón. Mil Palmeras is a coastal resort that is small and more relaxed and translated means a “thousand palms”.

The city of Murcia delights us with its fine Baroque and Gothic style architecture including the highly decorated Plaza Cardenal Belluga which is the magnificent cathedral that sits rather majestically, commanding passer-bys attention. In contrast the 18th centrury Palacio Episcopal is of Rococo design it is the Bishops Palace and is another striking landmark of Murcia.

The contrast of buildings is evident form the design of the now City Hall, Ayuntamiento, which was built in the 1900s and is classed as modern in design.
